Las Vegas
The fabulous fifties are back in Las Vegas with an exhibit at the Nevada State Museum. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the exhibit recalls distinctive Las Vegas structures from another era. Photos of landmark casinos such as the Sands and the Flamingo are featured in "Mid-Century Modern Las Vegas Architecture."
Admission to the museum is $4 for adults, and children under 17 are admitted free. The museum, located in Lorenzi Park, is open Wed. - Sat. from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. For more information, visit the Nevada State Museum website. I have to admit a soft spot for some bygone Las Vegas casinos, including 1958's Stardust, which was demolished in 2007. Do you have any memories of bygone Las Vegas casinos? A big welcome to Las Vegas for the newest stars on the Strip, twin tiger cubs at the Mirage. The white tiger cubs, born June 22 in Florida, have been named Majestic and Mohan. The twin tiger brothers, now seven weeks old, are on display at Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at 3400 Las Vegas Blvd. South in Las Vegas.
"They play really well together, but they will also play independently," said the cubs' neonatal care specialist, Gail Hedberg, to the Las Vegas Sun. "They're not so bonded to each that if one is not in sight, the other one panics." The cubs will live in a nursery for a few weeks until they join the other tigers. Have you checked out the tiger cubs? Share your comments below.

With rampant unemployment and half-finished construction projects such as the Fontainebleau, the city of Las Vegas is taking matters into its own hands... and considering a ban on Hula-Hoops. The city council may ban Hula-Hoops on the Fremont Street Experience because of traffic disruptions. The full board will hear the bill restricting Hula-Hoops and other activities on the pedestrian mall on Aug. 18. What do you think? Should Sin City ban Hula-Hoops? Share your comments below.

Las Vegas heated up in July, and the month set a new record for triple-digit highs every day of the month. The average temperature at McCarran International Airport hit 96.2 degrees for July, breaking the month's previous record of 95.4 degrees in July 2007.
Around Las Vegas, 21-and-up pools offer the chance to cool off during the heat wave. Moorea Beach Club at Mandalay Bay even took the unusual move of requiring tops to help the pool "reach out to more people." Local customers tend to frequent the pool during the week. How did you beat the heat last month? Share your comments below.

Chris Brown turns 21 in May. But he won't be celebrating big in Vegas.
According to reports from Fox 5 News MORE sources, the singer's attempts to find a suitable venue for his birthday party were rejected because nightclub promoters are wary of jeopardizing their relationship with Rihanna.
Nightclubs in Las Vegas, New York and Miami were reportedly on Brown's short list to host his birthday party.
Brown was plead guilty last year to felony assault on his pop superstar girlfriend, Rihanna, and was sentenced to five years probation.

This is some good news for valley residents: some Las Vegans can now register their new vehicles or transfer existing plates online without going to a DMV location!
The Electronic Dealer Report of Sale system is beginning a trial run with 10 local car dealerships (the Desert group, Findlay Honda, People’s Mazda and Towbin Hummer) which will issue the required DRS to the department over the Internet, along with insurance information and emission testing results.
The customer then uses the copy of the DRS to complete the registration on the DMV website themselves. A temporary movement permit can then be printed by the user until plates and decals arrive in the mail.
There are some restrictions of course. Motor homes and trailers cannot be registered online, and certain license plate styles, like antique or classic vehicles, cannot be transferred.
For further information and questions, visit the DMV website or call (702) 486-4368.

The display features a 15-foot long ox, the symbol of prosperity. An 18-foot-tall Chinese God of Wealth and Fortune is just a few feet away, surrounded by I-Ching coins, a traditional Chinese money symbol.
